On my shelf stands a small library of books I never finished. Some were abandoned in the middle of a chapter, others after a single page, and a few lie open at the same sentence for years, like letters that could not decide to end. They are not failures; they are landmarks of where I was when I put them down.

We are taught to finish what we start, and the advice is mostly sound. But a book is a conversation, and some conversations end because both parties have said what they needed to say. I have learned to thank the books I left behind: they taught me what I did not need, which is a quieter kind of knowledge, and they kept their unread pages as a promise I might still keep.

There is a freedom in abandoning a book that we do not always allow ourselves. Not everything begun must be completed; some things are beginnings by nature, and to force an ending on them is to misread their purpose entirely.

So I keep my unfinished library with the same care I keep the finished one. Someday I may return to those pages, or I may not; either answer is acceptable. A shelf of abandoned books is not a confession of weakness but a record of becoming, and every bookmark left between the pages marks not a failure but a pausing that was, at the time, exactly right.
