美文 · Essay
Every language has a grammar of goodbye, and we learn it the way we learn any grammar: by making mistakes. The first goodbyes are clumsy, rehearsed into a mirror, too long or too short. Gradually we discover that the truest farewells are rarely the ones we rehearse; they are the ones that slip out on ordinary days, from the porch, at the gate, without ceremony.
每种语言都有一套告别的语法,而我们像学任何语法一样学会它:靠犯错。最初的告别笨拙不堪,对着镜子排练,不是太长就是太短。慢慢地我们才发现,最真切的告别,很少是我们排练过的那一种;它们是平常日子里溜出来的那一种,在门廊上,在院门口,没有任何仪式。
A good goodbye is a sentence that knows how to end. It does not drag its clauses or multiply its commas; it says what must be said and then stops, the way a poem stops, the way rain stops. We admire people who can do this, who can close a chapter and mean it, who can wave once and then turn, carrying the full weight of what they are leaving.
一场好的告别,是一个懂得如何结尾的句子。它不拖沓从句,也不滥用逗号;它把该说的说完,然后停下,像诗停下那样,像雨停下那样。我们敬佩做得到这种事的人:能合上一章并且真的放下,能挥一次手然后转身,带着他们正要离开的一切的全部重量。
Some goodbyes are incomplete by design; they leave a door ajar, a sentence without a period, because both people know the story is not finished. Others are final, and the grammar shows it: short verbs, no qualifiers, a handshake where a hug used to be. The difficulty is never in the words. It is in accepting that the last page, however we write it, will never fully agree with us.
有些告别刻意地不完整;它们留着一扇虚掩的门,一个没有句号的句子,因为两个人都知道故事还没有完。另一些告别是最终的,语法也暴露了这一点:动词很短,没有修饰语,从前拥抱的地方变成一次握手。难处从来不在词句,而在于接受:最后那一页,无论我们怎么写,都不会完全合我们的意。
There is a skill in letting people go without letting them disappear from us. We keep them not in the present tense but in the way a river keeps the rain: changed, carried, and still itself. The farewell does not erase the conversation; it adds a silence to it, and in that silence the truest things finally become audible.
放人离开却不让他们从我们这里消失,是一种本领。我们留住他们,用的不是现在时,而是河流留住雨水的方式:改变了,带走了,却仍然是它自己。告别并不会抹去那段对话,只是为它添上一段静默;而正是在那段静默里,最真实的东西终于变得可以听见。
We are all learning the same lesson at different speeds: that goodbye is not the opposite of love but its final form of grammar, the tense in which we say what we were too shy to say in the present. Say it well, and the leaving becomes a kind of staying; say it poorly, and even the staying becomes a kind of leaving.
我们都在以不同的速度学习同一个道理:告别不是爱的反面,而是爱的最后一种语法形态,是我们在其中说出那些当下羞于启齿的话的时态。说得好,离别便成了一种停留;说得不好,连停留也会变成一种离别。
