The Economics of Attention
佚名

Attention is the only currency we are born with, and we spend it whether we choose to or not. Every scroll, every half-listened conversation, every glance at a glowing screen is a withdrawal from an account that never grows back. We treat it as free because it costs nothing to open the app; but the price is paid later, in the life we failed to notice.

The modern economy has discovered that human attention is scarce, and it has built vast machines to harvest it. Our evenings are mined for engagement, our commutes drilled for data, our silences sold to the highest bidder. We have become the resource, and we are running out of ourselves, the way a forest runs out when every tree is counted as lumber.

Yet focus cannot be forced; it can only be protected. The writer needs the empty desk, the scholar needs the closed door, the one who loves needs a room without a screen. Deep attention is not a talent but a territory, and we must mark its borders with the same care a nation gives its coasts. Guard the hours; they are all the land we truly own.

What we attend to becomes our biography. No one will remember how many messages you answered at midnight, but the book you finished, the child you listened to, the thought you followed to its end: these are the events that actually happened in your life. The rest was weather, passing over an unwatched field. It was never stolen; it simply went unseen.

The economics of attention has a simple rule, older than any market: you become what you look at. Look at anger and you thicken with it; look at wonder and it multiplies in you. So choose your curiosities as carefully as you choose your debts, for you will be paying for them, one glance at a time, for the rest of your life.

Grammar Notes

Every scroll, every half-listened conversation, every glance at a glowing screen is a withdrawal from an account that never grows back."
三个由 every 修饰的名词短语并列作主语时,谓语动词用单数 is;that never grows back 是定语从句修饰 account,其中 never 与 grows 配合表示永远不会回升。
not...but...
Deep attention is not a talent but a territory, and we must mark its borders with the same care a nation gives its coasts."
not...but... 连接两个表语,形成对比;with the same care a nation gives its coasts 中,care 后省略了关系词 that/with which,定语从句修饰 care,可理解为 a nation gives the same care to its coasts。 举一反三:当先行词前有 the same、all、the only 等修饰时,关系词常被省略。
Look at anger and you thicken with it; look at wonder and it multiplies in you."
