Open any calendar and you will find months but no weather. The page shows numbers, neatly spaced, as if January and July were the same temperature and every Tuesday weighed the same. Yet the year we actually live is not counted in squares; it is measured in light, in rain, in the first day you notice the evenings growing short.

The seasons have their own timetable, indifferent to the numbers we print above them. Spring arrives not on a date but as a smell in the soil; autumn announces itself from a particular angle of the afternoon sun. The same week can feel like two different years, depending on which window you look through, and the calendar cannot settle the argument.

We invented the calendar to catch time, the way a net catches a river; we keep only what the mesh allows. Birthdays, deadlines, anniversaries: these are the fish we can see. But the rest of time flows through, and it is in that overflow that we actually live, in the unmarked afternoons that later become the memory we treasure most.

Somewhere between the printed month and the felt one lies the real year, which each of us must calibrate for ourselves, alone and again.

Perhaps the calendar is not a lie but a translation, and every translation leaves something behind. It is useful for arranging meetings and hopeless for arranging a life. So learn both alphabets: the one printed on the wall, and the one written in the behavior of light. The second is harder to read, but it is the only one that has ever been accurate.
