Learning to Swim in Deep Water
佚名

The water is honest in a way that land rarely is. It does not pretend to be shallow when it is deep, and it will not hold you up just because you are afraid. You learn its moods by entering them: the cold shock at the ankles, the slow surrender of the knees, the moment when your feet leave the bottom and the world tilts.

Most of us learn to swim in shallow water and mistake that for courage. But there comes a day when the pool ends, when the rope of safety runs out, when we are asked to trust a depth we cannot see. Uncertainty, we discover, is the actual water we have been training in all along; every challenge is just deeper practice.

The first strokes in deep water are never graceful. Panic asks the body to hurry; the water asks it to be patient. Between these two voices, a swimmer learns something the pool never taught: that floating is not giving up, that breathing is a form of thinking, and that the surface will always be there if we simply stop fighting it.

What changes, eventually, is not the depth but the swimmer. The water stays as deep and as dark as ever; only the chest stops tightening. There is a day, unannounced, when the feet kick without being ordered and the arms find their own rhythm, and the swimmer realizes that the fear he carried so carefully was heavier than any water he would ever enter. Courage is simply that recognition, arriving late.

And yet we go on entering cold lakes and new jobs and honest conversations, because the alternative is a shore we already know too well. Deep water asks a question we must answer with our whole body: will you trust what you cannot see? Those who learn to say yes discover that the depths, once fathomed, are not an enemy but a home.

Grammar Notes

You learn its moods by entering them: the cold shock at the ankles, the slow surrender of the knees, the moment when your feet leave the bottom and the world tilts."
there comes 倒装与三个 when 从句排比
例:"But there comes a day when the pool ends, when the rope of safety runs out, when we are asked to trust a depth we cannot see."
there comes a day 是倒装句,正常语序为 a day comes,主语后置以强调到来的那天;三个 when 从句并列作定语修饰 a day,构成排比;we cannot see 前省略了关系词 that。
例:"will you trust what you cannot see?"
what you cannot see 是 what 引导的名词性从句作 trust 的宾语,what 相当于 the thing that,翻译为你无法看见的东西;整个问句为一般将来时。 举一反三:what 从句跟在及物动词后就是宾语从句,也可以放在介词后,如 think about what he said。
