The Letters We Never Send
佚名

There is a drawer somewhere in every house that holds letters never sent. Apologies written and folded, thanks composed but never stamped, questions that would have changed everything had they been asked. We keep them out of habit, telling ourselves that someday we will finish what we began. The sealed envelope hardens into a monument of hesitation, and most of us never dare to reopen it.

The unsent letter is a strange genre. It speaks truer than the letters we actually mail, because it was written for no audience but the writer. In its sentences we find the courage that daily life removes from us. Regret does its clearest thinking in the second person, addressing the one who will never read the words. It is a monologue without a listener and without fear.

Some letters remain unsent because the right moment never arrives. Time is supposed to heal such things, but healing is not the same as resolution. We imagine that forgiveness must wait for the perfect sentence, the fair weather, the courage that never comes. Meanwhile the drawer fills, and the distance between two people grows the way a river grows wider the further it travels from its source.

Perhaps the bravest act is not writing the letter but sending it. To mail a letter is to admit that we were wrong, or that we cared, or that a year has passed and we are still thinking of someone. It is to place our dignity in a mailbox and walk away, hoping it lands gently. The reply, if it comes, is secondary.

At the end of our lives, the letters we sent will be forgotten; the ones we never wrote will keep asking their questions. So write the difficult letter. Buy the stamp. Walk to the corner where the blue box waits like an honest judge. Whatever the answer, you will have done something rare: you will have chosen closure over comfort, and begun again.

Grammar Notes

Apologies written and folded, thanks composed but never stamped, questions that would have changed everything had they been asked."
written and folded、composed but never stamped 都是过去分词短语作后置定语,分别修饰 apologies 与 thanks,表示被动的状态;questions 后由 that 引导定语从句,其中 would have changed 表示与过去事实相反的虚拟,had they been asked 是省略 if 的倒装,等于 if they had been asked。 举一反三:当 if 从句含 had 时,可把 had 提前省去 if,形成 had they done 这样的倒装虚拟。
be supposed to 与动名词作主语
例:"Time is supposed to heal such things, but healing is not the same as resolution."
be supposed to do 表示理应、按道理应该;healing 是动名词短语作主语,谓语用 is;not the same as 表示与……
将来完成时 will have done
例:"Whatever the answer, you will have done something rare: you will have chosen closure over comfort, and begun again."
Whatever the answer 是让步状语从句的省略形式,等于 no matter what the answer is;主句用将来完成时 will have done,表示在将来的某个时刻回头看时已经完成;第二个分句承接 will have, begun 是 begin 的过去分词,构成 will have begun。
