Stand at the edge of the sea and you are standing in two times at once. The water touching your feet has just arrived from a storm near Antarctica; the pebble beneath them was rounded ten thousand years before anyone built a city. The sea keeps no calendar, yet it never forgets.

What the sea remembers is not events but patterns: the pull of the moon, the schedule of monsoons, the shape of every coast it has spent millennia negotiating. In this it resembles an old person who has forgotten names but remembers exactly how every story goes.
