Dear younger me, I write to you from a future you cannot imagine and will not believe: you are, at last, mostly fine. I know you keep a list of your failures in a notebook nobody will ever read. Burn it. None of the entries turned out to be permanent.

That thing you are afraid will define you — the failed exam, the friendship that dissolved, the summer you wasted — will instead become a story you tell at dinner, softer and funnier each year. Pain does not last; only our retelling of it does, and we control the retelling.

那件你害怕将定义你一生的事——失手的考试、无疾而终的友谊、荒废的夏天——终会成为你在餐桌上讲述的故事，而且一年比一年温柔、好笑。痛苦不会长存；长存的只是我们对它的复述，而复述的方式由我们掌握。

Two warnings. First, the people you are trying so hard to impress are not watching; they are busy worrying about their own performance. Second, the things you postpone out of fear — the conversation, the trip, the apology — grow heavier with waiting, never lighter. Almost everything is easier today than it will be in five years.

给你两个提醒。第一，你拼命想留下好印象的那些人，其实并没有在看你，他们都忙着担忧自己的表现。第二，你因恐惧而推迟的事——那次谈话、那趟旅行、那句道歉——只会越等越重，不会越等越轻。几乎所有事，今天做都比五年后做容易。

And one comfort: you will not become the person you are planning to be. You will become someone stranger, kinder, and more specific — shaped by books you have not yet heard of and losses you cannot foresee. That is not a plan failing. That is a life happening. With more tenderness than you expect, — yourself, later.
