No one becomes who they are alone. Behind every confident adult stands a chain of ordinary people — a teacher who stayed late, a neighbor who believed a rumor of talent, a friend who kept calling. We call our achievements personal, but they are built on bridges laid down by others.

A bridge is a good image because it does two things at once: it connects two separated places, and it holds weight without complaint. Good relationships do the same. They connect our private world to someone else's, and they carry the heavy traffic of bad days, borrowed money, midnight phone calls, and forgiven mistakes.
