Friendship, in the beginning, is loud. It is late nights and inside jokes, the exhilaration of finding someone who laughs at exactly the thing you find funny. We think this noise is the substance of it. It isn't.
The real test comes later, when life pulls people into different cities, different hours, different shapes of living. Most friendships quietly dissolve here, not through betrayal but through neglect — the message left unanswered, the birthday remembered a week late, the vague intention to reconnect that never becomes a date.
The ones who stay are rarely the ones who promised the most. They are the ones who showed up. Who sat in a hospital corridor with terrible coffee. Who said, without being asked, "I'll be there at seven." Who could go six months without a word and then pick up mid-sentence, as though no time had passed at all.
What such friendship offers is not entertainment but recognition. To be known — genuinely known, flaws and history included — and still be chosen, is among the quieter miracles of being alive.
So call the one you have been meaning to call. Friendship is not a thing you have; it is a thing you keep doing. And the doing, however small, is the whole of it.
