What the River Knows
佚名

A river has never once worried about arriving. It simply goes, and in going, it becomes what it is.

Watch it long enough and you will notice that it never argues with the stone. When something immovable stands in its way, the water does not stop to complain; it curves, it slips underneath, it waits and rises. Over centuries, without a single act of force, it carves the canyon that no hammer could. This is the strange arithmetic of nature: what is soft outlasts what is hard, and what yields is rarely defeated.

We are taught to admire the mountain — its permanence, its refusal to move. But the mountain is slowly coming apart, grain by grain, while the river that wears it down is renewed every morning by rain it never asked for. Strength that cannot bend is only waiting for the wind that will break it.

There is comfort in this, if you let there be. You do not have to force your way through the season you are in. You are allowed to move around the obstacle instead of through it, to rest in a still pool for a while, to arrive later than you planned. The river is not behind schedule. It is simply, patiently, on its way to the sea — and so, whether you feel it today or not, are you.

Grammar Notes

Watch it long enough and you will notice that it never argues with the stone.
"祈使句 + and + 将来时"等于一个条件句:= If you watch it long enough, you will notice…。 Hurry up, or you'll miss the train.(快点,否则赶不上火车。)
例:what is soft outlasts what is hard, and what yields is rarely defeated
what 在从句中兼作主语,相当于 the thing which,本身不可省略。
例:the river that wears it down is renewed every morning by rain it never asked for
主干是 the river ... is renewed ... by rain(被动语态)。that wears it down 修饰 river;it never asked for 是省略了关系代词 that/which 的定语从句,修饰 rain(因为关系词在从句中作介词 for 的宾语,可省略)。
It is simply, patiently, on its way to the sea — and so, whether you feel it today or not, are you.
正常语序为 and so are you(你也是),这里在 so 与 are 之间插入了让步状语从句 whether…or not,因此看起来像 "and so … are you"。 区分:So am I.(我也是,倒装)vs. So I am.(我确实是,不倒装,表示认同对方的评价)。
